City myths

This page will present a collection of urban myths set in Bristol sent in by participants in the project:

Bristol was my home for the first twenty years of my life before I migrated to Australia. My work in Bristol often resulted in me having to travel to other parts of Britain and I occasionally heard a story about Bristol that I never heard at home. It was about an unfortunate monkey that escaped from a ship tied up in the harbour in the 16th century. The story goes that the Bristolians were amazed by this creature and very unsure what it was. Eventually it was decided that it must be a Spaniard so they clubbed it to death.
